One of the project elements we are most excited about is the removal of that drafty old door that went from the family room out to the back yard, and replacing it with a nice new door that goes from the dining room directly onto the patio.
Here the dining room window is out and waiting for me to cut out the rest of the wall.
Taking out the framing on the inside was no problem, but I was rather concerned about cutting out the stucco on the exterior. But it turned out to be one of the easiest things I did. I just put a masonry blade on my "Skill saw" and cut along the lines I needed, and it peeled right out in one piece after I cut some of the wire mesh still holding it in place. But the single piece was very very heavy.
A long shot of our great new door. It is beautiful and very functional.
The ceiling fan you see in the dining room in this photo is moving to the living room.
Oh yes, notice that old stool from the kitchen on the right? We do miss that "railing" in the entry way in that one way - that it gave us somewhere to put things we needed to remember to take with us - the stool is standing in for that function at present. But that is the only way we miss it and we are quickly getting over that one. We are glad to be rid of it.
And here is a closer look. It is a well-sealed, energy efficient Pella door (that's from Pella, Iowa, think tulip festival). Ever since we saw Uncle Max & Aunt Glenda's back door with the blinds inside the glass, we have dreamed of having a similar door ourselves. And now we have it. Little sliders on the sides (at the top) allow us to move the blinds up and down and to adjust them while they are fully down to let in more or less light.
Did we mention that we love this door?
Oh yes, and this is the former exit to the back yard, awaiting the stucco man.
We are considering putting a bunch of pots on that landing to keep folks (me) from tripping over it since I have no intention of removing it.
